How to Apply Self Tanning Gel Without Streaks

A self tan can look natural and even, or patchy and orange. Most of the difference comes down to prep and technique, not the product. Here is a simple routine you can follow at home.

1. Exfoliate the day before

Self tanner colours the outer layer of your skin. If that layer is dry or uneven, the colour will be uneven too. The day before you tan, exfoliate your whole body with a scrub or an exfoliating mitt. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, ankles and heels.

If you shave or wax, do it the day before as well, so your skin has time to settle.

2. Start with clean, dry skin

Shower before you apply, then dry off completely. Skip deodorant, perfume and body oil, because they can stop the tanner from developing evenly.

3. Moisturise only the dry spots

Dry areas grab more colour. Put a small amount of light moisturiser on your elbows, knees, ankles, wrists and knuckles. Leave the rest of your skin bare.

4. Apply in sections

Work from the bottom up: legs, then torso, then arms. Use a tanning mitt and long, sweeping strokes, then blend with small circles. Do one section at a time so you do not miss a patch.

This matters even more with a clear gel. There is no dark guide colour to show you where you have been, so be methodical: lower leg, upper leg, then move on.

5. Go light on hands, feet and face

Use only what is left on the mitt for hands and feet, and blend toward the wrists and ankles. Wipe your palms, nails and between your fingers with a damp cloth right after.

6. Let it dry before you dress

Give the gel a few minutes to dry, then wear loose, dark clothing. Follow the instructions on your product for how long to wait before showering or sweating.

7. Make it last

  • Moisturise every day once the colour has developed.
  • Pat your skin dry after a shower instead of rubbing.
  • Avoid long hot baths and harsh scrubs for the first few days.

One thing to remember

A self tan is colour only. It does not protect your skin from the sun, so you still need sunscreen outdoors.

Why a clear gel?

Tinted mousses show you where you have applied, but the guide colour can transfer onto clothes and sheets while it develops. A clear gel skips that step. Our Clear Self Tanning Gel is lightweight, dries fast and needs no rinsing, so you can apply it and get on with your day.
